Mix Eight

Mix Eight brings with it no less than four VibeRide debuts, and of course lots more funkful grooves from our favourites.

Here's the tracklist:

1). Los Charly's Orchestra - 'Some Of The Things' - from their Disco Funk EP
2). Chic - 'Good Times' - from album 'Dance, Dance, Dance: Best of Chic'
3). Shalamar - 'There It Is' - from album 'A Night To Remember: best of'
4). Freeez - 'One To One' - from album 'Freeez Frame! - The Best Of Freeez'
5). Banda Black Rio - 'Magio Do Prazer' (Faze Action Mix) - from 'Rebirth: Banda Black Rio'
6). Duran Duran - 'Girls On Film' (12") - from album 'Strange Behaviour'
7). Roy Ayers - 'Life Is Just A Moment (pt 2) - from album 'Roy Ayers Gold'
8). Stevie Wonder - 'Too High' - from album 'Innervisions'
9). Tower Of Power - 'Taxed To The Max' - from album 'Souled Out'
10). Prince - 'I Feel For You' - from album 'Hits-B-Sides'
11). Diana Ross - 'Upside Down' - from album 'The Ultimate Collection'
The first six tracks on Mix Eight feature bassline licks that fit together like lego bricks. We then take it down just a notch and chill a little with Roy Ayers and Stevie Wonder before Tower Of Power take it back to the top with a real sing-along track. We then round it off with a little cracker from Prince and a - there's no other word for it - 'classic' from Diana Ross.

We first heard Los Charly's Orchestra's 'Some Of The Things' (original vocal mix) only recently on jazz FM here in the UK. We liked them so much we decided to include them in this mix and it's likely we'll put in one or two more in forthcoming shows. We're happy to promote them and hope you enjoy their music as much as we do.

Aside from Diana Ross and Los Charly's Orchestra there's also VibeRide debuts in Mix Eight for Banda Black Rio and Duran Duran. We're guessing at least some of our listeners were surprised to hear what is widely regarded as a pop group in a VibeRide mix, but keep in mind Duran Duran have worked with Nile Rodgers (the man behind Chic) and (in their early years) used basslines to drive many of their songs - which meant they had a genuine funk edge to their music.

With a Chic track and Diana Ross and Duran Duran, both of whom Nile Rodgers has worked with, it could be suggested that this show is a Nile Rodgers appreciation mix! Actually though this wasn't the intention, it kinda just happened like that, but hey he deserves much appreciation from us funk lovers and who knows perhaps we'll put together a special show dedicated to his work with Chic and others sometime soon. It probably should be done.
