Mix Two

VibeRide's second mix is now available and with it comes a new presenter who sounds great and adds an extra something to the show. This means for the moment I can just get on with the 'technical' stuff rather than doing the presenting. That's not to say, however, that I won't be doing any further shows (who knows in this crazy world right?) Anyway enough of that, let's talk about the show.

First up, here's the track list:

1). Roy Ayers - 'The Old One Two (Move To Groove)' - from his 1975 album 'A Tear To A Smile'
2). Prince - 'Chelsea Rodgers' - from his 2007 album 'Planet Earth'
3). Con Funk Shun - 'Music Is The Way' - from their 1976 self titled album
4). Chic - 'Everybody Dance (12" version) - from 'Dance, Dance, Dance The Best of Chic' 1991
5). Patrice Rushen - 'I Was Tired Of Being Alone' - from 'The Essentials: Patrice Rushen' 2002
6). Donald Byrd - 'In Love With Love' - 1972 album 'Thank You For Funking Up My Life'
7). Brothers Johnson - 'Ain't We Funkin' Now' - from their 1978 album 'Blam!!'
8). The Commodores - 'Brick House' - from their 1977 self-titled album
9). Jermaine Jackson - 'Let's Get Serious' - from his 1979 album 'Let's Get Serious'
10). Aretha Franklin - 'Rock Steady' - from 'What it is! Funky Soul & Rare Grooves (1967-77')
11). Freeez - 'Southern Freeez' - from 'Freeez Frame: The Best Of Freeez' 1993

The first two songs on this show are personal favourites of mine and get lots of rotation on my system at home. The album that Roy Ayer's 'The Old One Two' comes from has three or four other great tracks also and is worth getting hold of. 'Chelsea Rodger's' is a song that stands head and shoulders above the rest of the album upon which it appears. Prince has a recent habit of making albums that have one fantastic old school-sounding funky groove and a bunch of other songs that are instantly forgettable. Probably just a phase (he is a genius after all).

Then there's Con Funk Shun's second appearance on VibeRide with a second track from their self-titled album, which I thoroughly recommend acquiring.

I just love the 12" version of Chic's classic 'Everybody Dance'. It's a simple , but tight song with one clear motive - to get people dancin'.

I guess most people probably don't know who Patrice Rushen is, but you certainly would know her famous hit 'Forget Me Not's', which got to number 8 in the UK charts back in 1981 (the chorus and beat of which was sampled for the theme to the movie 'Men In Black').
Interestingly, the 54 year old, started out as a classically trained pianist. Whatever she's doing now she certainly deserves her place on VibeRide and we'll be hearing one or two more from her in the near future.

Donald Byrd is a rather recent discovery for me, but I instantly took a shine to 'In Love With Love'. It's that bouncy bassline that makes this song something memorable. Anyway, listen, enjoy and feel free to comment.
