Mix Three

VibeRide Mix Three is now available. There's some real crackers on this one and aside from lots of classic tracks, there's a couple of big contemporary tunes from current jazz-funk outfit The Sunburst Band and instrumentalist Brian Culbertson.

Here's the tracklist in full:

1). Stevie Wonder - 'Superstition' - from his 1974 live album 'Funkified Rainbow'
2). Sunburst Band - 'We Will Turn You On' - from their 2007 album 'Until The End Of Time'
3). The Blackbyrds - 'Blackbyrds' Theme' - from 'The Blackbyrds Greatest Hits' 1989
4). Roy Ayers - 'Hey Uh What You Say C'mon' - from his 1975 album 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine'
5). Shalamar - 'Right In The Socket' - from 'Shalamar: A Night To Remember' 2005
6). Kool & The Gang - 'Fresh' - from 'Celebration: The Best Of' 1996
7). Prince - 'Uptown' - from his 1993 album 'Hits-B-Sides'
8). Teena Marie - 'Behind The Groove' - from 'Funkology' 2001
9). Level 42 - 'Are You Hearing (What I Hear?)' - from 'The Ultimate Collection' 2002
10). Earth, Wind & Fire - 'Mighty Mighty' - from their 1974 album 'Open Our Eyes'
11). Brian Culbertson - 'Excuse Me-What's Your Name?'- from his 2008 album 'Bringing Back The Funk'
12). Commodores - 'Slippery When Wet' - from their 1977 live album 'Commodores Live!'

Until very recently 'Funkified Rainbow' was the only (decent) Stevie Wonder live album around. - and it wasn't easy to get hold of. The DVD of his London O2 gig has just been released, which is great, but 'Funkified Rainbow 'is from the time when Stevie was at his peak and at his funkiest and just has something special about it.

The SunBurst Band was seemingly put together by producer Dave Lee (aka Joey Negro) a few years ago and have two good albums
to their name with a very retro, funky and soulful sound . We certainly hope to hear more from them in the near future.

We introduced Donald Byrd in Mix Two and The Blackbyrds, who feature in this mix, were a jazz-fusion group fronted by him back in the mid 70's. In his earlier years, the trumpeteer Donald Byrd played with many of the jazz greats including Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and Herbie Hancock.

Many people know Shalamar's hits such as 'There it is', 'A NIght To Remember and 'I Can Make You Feel Good', which are great tracks, but I especially like the much lesser known 'Right In The Socket' for its driving bass riff. When you follow that with Kool And The Gang's 'Fresh' you've got a great bass-driven combo.

'Uptown' by Prince is a B-Side of some sort and a damn fine one at that. I guess Prince got bored of doing this classic style, but I love it and I'm glad I came across his B-Side's collection.

I'm pleased to include some Level 42 in this show as Mark King is an excellent bassist and singer to boot. I saw them perform live at The Royal Albert Hall several years ago and they put on a great show.

The Earth, Wind & Fire song that features on this show is a real oldie and it was one of the first glimpses of their ability to funk things up and shift into jazz-fusion.

Brian Culbertson is an American instrumentalist whom I came across whilst listening to Jazz FM here in the UK and 'Bringing Back The Funk' was an album title I couldn't ignore!

Lastly, the 'Commodores Live!' album deserves a mention as the production and sound on it are excellent, which isn't always the case on live albums. It's still readily available on CD and download and I recommend it.
